- Drinking water’s pH is an important parameter. Water pipes in residences and the distribution system will corrode if the pH is too low for drinking water. The pH of water also affects other characteristics like flavor, odor, clarity, and disinfection effectiveness. The pH of water is measured in the US using a meter in accordance with EPA technique 150.1 and Standard Methods 4500-H.
- It’s challenging to measure the pH of water devoid of minerals. Water will be less conductive the lower the mineral content. Since the pH meter is an electrochemical device that depends on the solution being measured being conductive, low conductivity water creates a problem.
- The majority of drinking water treatment facilities draw their point supply of water for treatment from either surface water (lakes, rivers, and streams) or groundwater. Surface water often has fewer minerals, which lowers the conductivity/TDS measurements. Groundwater has a higher mineral concentration than surface water that has seeped through limestone, dolomite, or gypsum. There are some groundwater sources, nevertheless, that have relatively little mineral concentration.
- The FC2153 amplified pH electrode with glass body is used by the HI99192. Numerous features of this customized electrode enhance pH testing of drinking water. Without the use of a separate temperature probe, temperature compensated pH measurements are possible thanks to an inbuilt temperature sensor. The spheric sensing tip of the probe has a large measurement surface area in aqueous liquids.
- The reference junction is a crucial component of every pH electrode. Ions from the reference cell might flow into the sample being measured through the reference junction, a component of the electrode. An electrical connection between the reference electrode and the indicating electrode is made possible by the ions. A typical pH electrode consists of a single ceramic connection that permits electrolyte to flow at a rate of 15 to 20 L/hour.
- Three ceramic connections on the FC2153 allow electrolyte to flow at a rate of 40 to 50 L per hour. This higher flow makes it appropriate for water with low ionic strength by ensuring stronger continuity between the reference electrode and the indicating electrode. The refill cap needs to be unscrewed in order to be opened, which will improve the flow from the electrode. This makes it possible to establish positive head pressure, which makes it easier for the electrolyte to enter the sample.
Glass Body
The FC2153’s glass body is resistant to chemicals and quickly achieves thermal equilibrium, enabling a quicker, more reliable response.
Spherical Glass Tip
The sensor bulb and aqueous milk sample have the best interaction when they are in touch with a big surface area.
Triple Ceramic Junction
Electrolyte can flow at a rate of 40 to 50 L/hour through three ceramic connections. It is suitable for water with low ionic strength because of the increased flow, which increases the continuity between the reference electrode and the indicating electrode.
Built-In temperature sensor

Features at-a-glance
Waterproof – The HI99192 is a waterproof meter rated IP67 for immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes.
Automatic Calibration – One or two-point calibration is automatic to two selectable buffer sets.
Automatic Temperature Compensation – An integrated temperature sensor allows for automatic temperature compensation of pH measurements.
Sensor Check – Using the pH‐mV range the user can check the sensor status by reading the mV reading in fresh buffers. At room temperature (25 oC/77oF) the reading should be +/- 30 mV in pH 7.01 and greater than 150 mV difference between pH 7.01 and 4.01.
Multi-Level LCD Display – The split-level LCD displays both pH and temperature readings, along with indicators for reading stability, battery percentage, and probe condition.
Probe Condition Indicator – The probe condition indicator is based on the offset and slope characteristic of the electrode. There are 5 bars ranging from all 5 indicating the probe is in excellent condition and 1 bar indicating the probe should be cleaned or replaced.
Battery Error Prevention System – The meter will automatically shut off if there isn’t enough power to obtain an accurate measurement.
Battery Life Indicator – The battery percent level is displayed at start up alerting the user to the remaining battery power that is available.
